User needs are what a person actually needs to understand, assess or complete a task. The need may be information, reassurance, overview, control, efficiency or help making a decision. It is not always the same as what the user says they want.

What do user needs involve in practice?

In practice, needs are identified through interviews, observation, support data, search, analytics and user testing. The insight should be connected to the organisation's goals so the design solves the right problems. A useful need is described specifically enough to influence content, functionality or prioritisation.

User needs are relevant before deciding on structure, messaging or features. They reduce the risk of building a solution based on internal assumptions. See user research, User experience and Target audience.
