Consent Mode

Consent Mode is a technical solution from Google that allows tags and measurement tools to adapt data processing to a user's consent. When a visitor has not given consent, the behaviour of Google tags can be limited. When consent is granted, relevant functions can be activated in line with that choice. Consent Mode is therefore not the consent banner itself, but the connection between consent and Google technology.

What does Consent Mode involve in practice?

In practice, Consent Mode is set up together with a CMP, such as Cookiebot, and a tag management system such as Google Tag Manager. Consent status for analytics, advertising and other purposes must be passed on correctly. The wrong sequence can cause tags to load too early, while incomplete configuration can lead to weaker data or poor privacy practices.

Consent Mode is relevant when a website uses Google Analytics, Google Ads or other Google tags. The setup must be assessed against the organisation's legal basis and how consent is actually collected. See Google's explanation of Consent Mode, Cookiebot and the Norwegian Data Protection Authority.
