Variables are named values that can be used in several places in a design system. They may be colours, spacing, sizes, shadows or typographic values. When a value changes in the variable, all elements using it can be updated together.
What do variables involve in practice?
In Webflow, variables are used to make design decisions more consistent. A colour variable for the primary colour can be used on buttons, links and backgrounds, while spacing variables can create a consistent rhythm between sections. Variables should have a clear naming system and represent design intent, not just random values.
