Skullerudbyen is set to become a new neighbourhood where urban living meets the natural surroundings of Østmarka. Working from Espen Østensvik’s design and visual concept, inspired in part by Tandberg’s history in Skullerud, we developed a website that brings the identity to life through motion and interaction.
Skullerudbyen is a new urban development project in Skullerud, Oslo, where a former industrial and commercial area is set to become a vibrant neighbourhood with homes, workplaces and places to meet, close to the Østmarka forest.
This relationship between the city and the surrounding forest is at the heart of the project. Skullerudbyen is not about choosing between urban living and being close to nature, but about finding your own balance between the two.
Inspired by Tandberg
The design and visual identity were developed by Espen Østensvik, drawing on both the area and its history.
One of the most distinctive elements takes inspiration from Tandberg Radio, which operated a factory in Skullerud for many years. The characteristic tuning scale of vintage Tandberg radios has been reinterpreted as a graphic element that moves between “Nature” and “City life”.
This also became an important starting point when bringing the design to the web.
A design in motion
Lumeno developed the website and brought Espen’s design into Webflow. Rather than treating the graphic balance element as purely decorative, we carried the idea through into motion and interaction.
Right from the hero section, two videos come together in a composition that automatically shifts back and forth between nature and city life. The same visual language appears throughout the website, with the balance changing to reflect the content and the side of Skullerudbyen being presented.
The result is subtle movement that adds a great deal to the experience, without making the website feel overloaded with effects and animations.
From Skullerud today to what comes next
Another interactive feature brings the urban development itself into focus. Visitors can drag between before-and-after images to see the envisioned transformation, from Skullerud as it looks today to visualisations of the new neighbourhood.
Together with video, imagery, typography and subtle animations, this helps the website do more than tell people about Skullerudbyen. It offers a glimpse of the idea behind the project.
A place between the forest and the city. Nature. City life. In balance.
