A 301 redirect is a permanent redirect from one URL to another. It is used when a page has been given a new address, so visitors and search engines are sent to the correct content. A redirect can also help preserve relevant signals from the old URL when the move is planned correctly.

What do 301 redirects involve in practice?

In practice, redirects are created from old addresses to the most relevant new page. Long redirect chains should be avoided, and valuable old URLs should not be sent to the homepage without consideration. Redirects must be tested after launch together with internal links and the sitemap.

301 redirects are particularly relevant during migrations, redesigns and changes to URL structure. They should be planned before launch in a redirect mapping. See Google's documentation on permanent redirects and canonical tags.
