User testing

User testing is a method where representative users complete tasks with a website, prototype or service while the team observes. The goal is to discover misunderstandings, friction and missing information, not to test whether the user is clever enough.

What does user testing involve in practice?

In practice, realistic tasks and clear observation points are prepared. Testing can be carried out in person or digitally, moderated or unmoderated. Findings should be sorted by severity and used to make concrete changes. A few good tests can reveal problems that internal reviews fail to identify.

User testing is relevant before launch, during a redesign and when data shows that users are dropping off. See Prototype, user research and Nielsen Norman Group's introduction to usability testing.
