A CDN, or Content Delivery Network, is a network of servers that delivers a website's files from a location close to the user. Instead of every visitor fetching images, CSS and JavaScript from one server, content can be delivered from a geographically closer server. This can reduce waiting time and make loading more stable.
What does a CDN involve in practice?
A CDN is mainly used for static files such as images, fonts, style sheets and scripts. How much it helps also depends on file sizes, caching, code and the distance between the user and the server. A CDN does not automatically make a heavy website fast. Images still need to be compressed and unnecessary code should be removed.
