Core Web Vitals are Google's measurements for key aspects of the user experience on a website. They look at, among other things, how quickly the main content appears, how quickly the page responds to actions and whether content moves while the page is loading. They provide a shared language for technical web performance, but do not replace comprehensive testing.

What do Core Web Vitals involve in practice?

In practice, performance is measured both through lab tests and real-user data. Improvements may involve images, font loading, JavaScript, third-party scripts, layout and server response. A good assessment looks at the most important pages, not just one perfect score on the homepage.

Core Web Vitals are relevant when a website should provide a fast and stable experience, especially on mobile. Performance also affects accessibility, SEO and conversion. See the web.dev overview of Core Web Vitals, CDN, Responsive design and Custom code.
