A grid is a framework of rows and columns used to organise content. It creates a clear structure for how text, images and components are positioned in relation to one another. A grid is a layout tool, not a finished design style.

What does a grid involve in practice?

In practice, a grid creates alignment, rhythm and consistency across sections. Columns can change at different screen sizes, and elements can have different widths based on the importance of the content. A good grid can adapt when text length and content change.

A grid is relevant when a website has many content sections or needs a clear visual structure. See Layout, Responsive design and MDN's guide to CSS Grid.
