A component library is a collection of reusable UI components such as buttons, cards, menus and form elements. It shows which building blocks exist, what they look like and how they should be used. The library is often an important part of a larger design system.

What does a component library involve in practice?

In practice, a library makes it easier for designers and developers to use the same solutions across a website. Each component should have documented variants, states, content requirements and accessibility considerations. A library must be updated when the components change in the actual solution.

A component library is relevant when several people need to build or maintain the same digital product. See Components, Pattern library and Design system.
