A pattern library is a collection of documented design patterns and examples of how they should be used. It may contain navigation, cards, forms, messages and other recurring solutions. The library shows both the component and the context in which it should be used.

What does a pattern library involve in practice?

In practice, a pattern library helps designers, developers and content owners reuse established solutions. The documentation should explain purpose, content, states and accessibility. A library that only shows images without usage rules quickly becomes difficult to trust.

A pattern library is relevant when a solution contains many patterns or has several contributors. See Design patterns, Component library and Design system.
