Mobile-first is a working method where a website is planned for the mobile screen first, before the layout is expanded for larger screens. The idea is to prioritise what matters most when space is limited, but the method is not necessarily the best fit for every project.
At Lumeno, we do not use mobile-first as a fixed rule. We consider the content, the user's situation and how the solution will actually be used. Some projects should prioritise mobile, while others have more important workflows on desktop.
What does mobile-first involve in practice?
Regardless of the working method, a website must work well on mobile, tablets and larger screens. We therefore build with responsive design, flexible layouts and content that can adapt to different screen sizes. The most important thing is that the solution feels clear and works well on all relevant devices.
Mobile-first can be useful when mobile use is dominant, but it should not be applied without consideration. See also user needs and the web.dev guide to responsive design.
