Motion design is the planned use of movement in digital interfaces. Movement can show relationships, provide feedback, explain a transition or give a brand more character. It should support the user's understanding, not simply make a page more spectacular.
What does motion design involve in practice?
In practice, the timing, direction, distance and easing should fit the action taking place. Movement should be short enough to feel responsive and calm enough not to distract. Good alternatives must also be available for users who prefer reduced motion.
Motion design is relevant when transitions and interactions need to become clearer or when a brand should feel more alive. See Animation, Microinteractions and MDN's guide to CSS animations.
