UX design, or user experience design, is the work of making a service useful, understandable and easy to use. UX covers the entire experience, from the first encounter with a website until the user has completed their task. It includes structure, content, interaction and perceived quality.

What does UX design involve in practice?

In practice, UX design starts with insight into users, needs and goals. Information architecture, user flows, wireframes, prototypes and solutions that can be tested are then developed. Visual design is important, but it should support an experience that works before it is polished.

UX design is relevant when a website needs to do more than look good. It is especially important for redesigns, complex services and digital self-service solutions. See Nielsen Norman Group's explanation of UX, User journey and User testing.
